NIGERIANS CRYS OUT AS CBN COUNTDOWN TO EXPIRATION OF OLD NAIRA NOTES BEGINS

Nigerians have reacted to the unveiling of the countdown to the January 31 deadline when the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes will cease to be legal tender by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on its official twitter page. This is amidst complaints that the new naira notes are not fully in circulation. Many Nigerians faulted the CBN for insisting on the deadline without making enough notes available. Reacting, a PoS operator in Egbeda area of Lagos, Gbenga, lamented that he had not been able to get the new Naira notes weeks to the deadline given by the CBN for the expiration of the old notes as a legal tender in Nigeria. He said even ATMs are not dispensing the new notes as directed by the CBN. An aggrieved customer, Sina Dare, said he had not laid his hands on the new notes since they were released last year.
